Paper cup manufacturers demand moratorium on loan repayment

Tamil Nadu-Puducherry Paper Cup Manufacturers’ Association has urged the State Government to announce a moratorium on repayment of the loans they had availed of from banks as their business has been affected following the ban on one time-use plastic items.

In its representation, submitted during the weekly grievance meet at the Collectorate on Monday, the Association said paper cup was one among the 14 items the Government had banned from January 1. The cup had 94% paper and six% LDPE plastic, which was of food grade.

When they met Ministers and senior officials to represent their grievance regarding the ban, they were told that if the Association could bring down the LDPE plastic content from six to four%, the Government could reconsider the ban on paper cup.

The paper cup manufacturing trade supported five lakh families in the State and that included 45 manufacturers in Coimbatore involving 1,500 families.

To run their industries, its members had availed of loans from banks and with they stopping production since January 1, they were unable to repay the borrowed sum, the Association said and urged the Government to issue an order or circular directing banks to stop asking for repayment.

The Association also wanted the Government to reconsider the ban on paper cups, as it had promised.
